High-density polyethylene (HDPE) is a crystalline thermoplastic resin polymerized from ethylene monomers under coordination or Ziegler-Natta catalysis. Its technical characteristics stem from its highly ordered linear molecular structure and high crystallinity, which endows the material with significant advantages in mechanical properties, environmental resistance, and processing adaptability, leading to its widespread application in numerous industrial and civilian fields.

From a molecular structure perspective, HDPE's main chain is predominantly linearly arranged, with few and short branches. The molecular chains easily pack together to form highly crystalline regions, with a crystallinity typically exceeding 80%. This structural feature directly results in its high density (0.941–0.965 g/cm³), significantly higher than low-density polyethylene (LDPE). High crystallinity not only improves the material's rigidity, hardness, and tensile strength (generally 20–35 MPa), but also enhances creep resistance, allowing products to maintain shape and dimensional stability under long-term load conditions.

In terms of mechanical properties, HDPE combines good toughness and impact resistance, maintaining high impact strength even at low temperatures. Its notched impact strength shows minimal change with temperature, demonstrating excellent resistance to brittle fracture. Its melting point range is approximately 120–130℃, and its Vicat softening point is above 110℃, allowing it to maintain structural integrity and reliable performance over a wide temperature range, making it suitable for pressure-bearing, heat-resistant, and long-term outdoor applications.

Chemical corrosion resistance is another core technical characteristic of HDPE. Its molecular chain consists of a saturated hydrocarbon structure, exhibiting good resistance to most acids, alkalis, salt solutions, and polar organic solvents. It is insoluble in solvents other than water and aliphatic hydrocarbons at room temperature, demonstrating stable service capability in chemical containers, pipelines, and corrosion-resistant components. Simultaneously, HDPE possesses good electrical insulation properties and low dielectric loss, making it suitable for electrical sheathing and insulation components.

In terms of processing performance, HDPE melt viscosity is moderate and its flowability is good, making it suitable for various molding processes such as blow molding, extrusion, injection molding, and rotational molding. Blow molding is efficient for producing hollow products such as bottles, cans, and barrels; extrusion is suitable for continuous manufacturing of pipes, sheets, and profiles, especially for municipal water supply and drainage and gas transmission pipes; injection molding can form products with complex shapes and high dimensional accuracy, such as turnover boxes, pallets, and industrial parts; rotational molding can integrally mold large seamless storage tanks and containers, with outstanding resistance to environmental stress cracking.

In terms of environmental adaptability, HDPE can be combined with antioxidants and light stabilizers to improve weather resistance, maintaining relatively stable performance even after long-term outdoor use. Its material is recyclable and reusable; through physical regeneration or chemical depolymerization and repolymerization, resource recycling can be achieved, meeting the requirements of sustainable development.

In summary, HDPE, with its linear regular structure, high crystallinity, and excellent comprehensive properties, forms a distinctive technical characteristic. It has significant advantages in strength, corrosion resistance, heat resistance, and processing versatility, making it an important representative of modern polymer materials that combines reliability and economy. Its technical characteristics provide a solid foundation for the development and application of various high-performance products.
